But for 2022, the stern on the brand’s latest boat has the look of a backyard deck with nary an outboard in sight. The new Sōlace 415CS at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was powered by twin Volvo Penta D6-DPI diesels mated to Aquamatic DuoProp sterndrives.

Volvo Penta is running a pilot project with Svalbard’s oldest tourist operator, Hurtigruten Svalbard, to test a state-of-the-art hybrid Marell M15 vessel called Kvitbjørn (’Polar Bear’ in English) that will change how tourists experience this natural wonder, delivering near-silent operation and creating a more enjoyable experience for tourists and wildlife alike.
USCG issues interim rule on fire safety of small passenger vessels
In response to the deadly Conception dive boat fire, the U.S. Coast Guard is issuing an interim rule as the first step to implementing statutorily mandated requirements for fire safety on certain covered small passenger vessels. This interim rule adds additional fire safety requirements for small passenger vessels, including fire detection and suppression systems, avenues of escape, egress drills, crew firefighting training, watchmen monitoring devices, and the handling of flammable items such as rechargeable batteries.
Southern Wind begins construction of new hybrid smart custom superyacht
Southern Wind has commenced construction of their first hybrid smart custom yacht, SW108#1, the company announced this week. “Hull and deck of this first unit in the new SW108 hybrid are currently under lamination and the delivery is scheduled for early summer 2023,” the company said in a statement. The company also detailed several of the yacht’s features, including an increased sail plan, twin rudder configuration, and a displacement of only 73.2 tonnes.
OXE Marine joins forces with US distributor
Outboard manufacturer OXE Marine AB has announced it is joining forces with its largest distributor, Diesel Outboards and Outdoor Network Manufacturing in the US, to significantly strengthen the focus on commercial and distribution development. In conjunction with the transaction, Magnus Grönborg has decided to step-down as CEO due to personal reasons and the Board of Directors has appointed Anders Berg as acting CEO, commencing this role during January but no later than the 31st of January. The US outboard market represents approximately 40% of the world-wide sales of outboard engines and between 40%-50% of OXE Marine’s revenue.
Aqua superPower and Tritium announce partnership to power electric boats on global waterways
Aqua superPower has partnered with Tritium, a global leader in DC fast-charging hardware and software, to expand the charging network for electric boats. Aqua superPower is said to be the world’s first fast-charging network operator for marinas, boatbuilders and boat owners, bringing electric power to the water and reducing the impact of boating on marine ecosystems. The company has been rolling out its network of marine fast-chargers with recent installations along the Cote d’Azur and the Italian Riviera, another in Venice, and a further 150 chargers planned next year, with substantial deployment growth to come thereafter.
Vision Marine to initiate stock repurchase program
The repurchase program will be funded using the company’s working capital. The Board of Directors of Vision Marine Technologies, maker of the E-Motion electric outboard powertrain, has authorised a stock buyback of up to 10% of the company’s common shares via privately negotiated transactions and open market purchases.
