Founders of E1 World Electric Powerboat Series on plans to turbocharge electric boating

The UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series is being billed as the world’s first and only electric powerboat racing series that its developers say will not only bring new levels of excitement to inshore racing but will also provide a vital platform to promote electric mobility. IBI touched base with E1 Series Co-Founder & CEO Rodi Basso to discuss plans for the series and the legacy concept designed to turbocharge sustainable electric boating around the world.

Vision Marine Moves Toward Mass Production

Montreal-based Vision Marine Technologies announced it has teamed with McLaren Engineering as it seeks to scale production of its E-Motion 180E electric outboard and powertrain system. McLaren will commence testing and tooling development, with the goal of reaching mass production of the electric outboard. Linamar, McLaren’s parent company, will provide the facility.

ePropulsion Expands Team

Electric outboard manufacturer ePropulsion announced in a statement that it hired Rita Li as marketing director. Li brings nearly a decade of experience in marketing and management to China-based ePropulsion.

Canada’s Vision Marine Technologies Sets Electric Speed Record at Ozarks Shootout

The 2021 Ozarks Shootout is the third year in which there's been an electric category, and it's also the third straight year Vision Marine Technologies has taken home the leading prize. The company previously operated under the name The Canadian Electric Boat Company until reorganizing in November 2020 as Vision Marine Technologies as part of a $27 Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq Exchange. As part of that new arrangement the company also announced plans to developed their own high-powered electric outboard.

New electric outboard wins 2 awards at Newport Boat Show

Rhode Island startup Flux Marine debuted its new electric outboard line at the Newport International Boat Show in September and came away as the winner of two Newport for New Products Awards: “Best Green Product ” and “Best New Boating Operation, Maintenance or Safety Product.”
From the beginning the company has been no stranger to awards and rewards. The project started in 2017 as thesis work in electric marine propulsion by Ben Sorkin at Princeton University. In 2018 Flux Marine was founded and Sorkin was joined by fellow Princetonian Jonathan Lord and Daylin Frantin of Boston University (BU).

We had a chat with Mitch Lee, Co-Founder and CEO of Arc Boats, who tells us about creating a 350kW electric boat and how it has a lot in common with the work his CTO and and other team members did on the Space X rockets. With their goal of transitioning marine transportation from fossil fuel to electric “as quickly as possible“, they have already been out skiing behind and testing demos of their high speed water sport towboat – a remarkable achievement considering they started the company less than 10 months ago.

Ingenity’s Super Air Nautique GS22E named a finalist for Boating Magazine 2021 Boat of the Year

Boating Magazine has selected Ingenity’s Super Air Nautique GS22E as one of five finalists for 2021 Boat of the Year. Powered by Ingenity’s electric propulsion and a 124 kWh battery, the Super Air Nautique GS22E features the highest energy density of any recreational electric-drive boat on the market. This boat boasts up to three hours of typical watersports use per charge. At idle, it is nearly silent. Nature and conversations are all that is heard. At speed, the cockpit is drastically quieter than an internal-combustion boat except for the water breaking against the hull.

Silent-Yachts sells first unit of new flagship Silent 100 Explorer

After unveiling its new flagship model, the Silent 100 Explorer, at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival in September, Austria’s Silent-Yachts has announced the sale of the first unit with delivery scheduled for 2023. “This new sale, coming after the sale of three of our 80ft models in rapid succession, confirms the market’s interest in the superior comfort of catamarans and solar energy for propulsion needs, as well as all the household appliances on board,” says Silent-Yachts founder and CEO, Michael Köhler.

Candela claims 60 orders for electric day cruiser

Swedish tech company Candela says it has taken more than 60 orders for its €290,000 electric boat, the Candela C-8, making the C-8 one of the fastest-selling 28ft boats on the market. The C-8 is Candela’s next-generation electric boat, using a new version of the company’s patented hydrofoil system. C-8 flies above the waves with greater range than any other electric boat, powered by a new, silent pod thruster – the Candela C-POD.
