Queen of the Susquehanna

Williamsport, Pa. -- Called the "Queen of the Susquehanna," the Hiawatha Paddlewheel is getting her final makeover before launching into a summer season of cruises, events, and parties. On a sunny Friday afternoon, Captains Darryl Stroble of Montoursville and Drew Gretzula of Bastress had paintbrushes out and were touching up the railings. "We start getting the boat ready in April," said Stroble. They give themselves about a month to paint, clean the exterior, scrape and clean the hull and fix up any rusty spots underneath. They also inspect the entire hull from the inside.

Mack Boring and Parts Co. celebrates 100th anniversary

Mack Boring & Parts Co. announced it is celebrating its 100th Anniversary. In 1922 Edward McGovern, nicknamed “Mack”, who served as a machinist in the U.S. Navy during WWI set out to build a business providing parts, cylinder boring and general machine shop work. The name of his company would become Mack Boring & Parts Co. which reflected his nickname and the services he would offer. Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, Mack Boring & Parts Co. is reflecting on the past 100 years while also looking ahead to the future.

New Torqeedo distributor in the US

Great Lakes Power, headquartered in Mentor, Ohio, is the latest company to be appointed as a Torqeedo distributor. Great Lakes Power specialises in the distribution, service, manufacturing, and engineering of powertrain solutions. The company will serve as the exclusive full-service distributor for Torqeedo Deep Blue electric propulsion systems in the eastern United States, offering sales and service support, factory trained technicians and genuine spare parts.

ePropulsion names CFO

ePropulsion, manufacturer of marine electric propulsion systems and services, has announced the appointment of Judy Gong, who has joined the company as its chief financial officer. Gong will be based in China and working across the ePropulsion offices. Her main responsibilities in the business will cover investment and financing affairs, internal company control systems and financial management.

Biodiesel warning to boat owners

Boat owners are being advised to take steps to mitigate the effects of biodiesel on their inboard engines. Marine fuel experts are reporting a rise in the number of sailors finding increased filter plugging from a new contaminant, carboxylic acid, or soap, forming as a result of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) content in diesel.

Southern Illinois Transfer’s new towboat powered by Mitsubishi engines from Laborde

Southern Illinois Transfer, Sparta, Ill., is building a new retractable pilothouse vessel at Kaskaskia Shipyard Inc., Red Bud, Ill. The new towboat will be powered by two Mitsubishi diesel propulsion engines, supplied by Laborde Products, Covington, La. Main propulsion will come from Mitsubishi S6R2-Y3MPTAW Tier 3 diesel marine engines rated at 803 hp at 1,400 rpm each. Additionally, this is the first build where Laborde supplied Mitsubishi engines to be coupled to Veth Z-drives.
